In a recent study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists have found evidence of ancient copper smelting pollution from Roman and Medieval times through analyzing ice cores from Greenland. Researchers analyzed the ice cores for trace amounts of lead and copper, which are byproducts of copper smelting. They found that during the Roman Empire and Medieval times, there was a significant increase in copper smelting activity in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean region. The increase in smelting activity led to a spike in pollution levels, with the lead and copper being carried by winds to Greenland where it settled in the ice. By analyzing the ice cores, researchers were able to create a timeline of ancient copper smelting activity, and also estimate the amount of pollution put into the atmosphere during those times.
