Copper Conquest: Mapping the Journey from Mine to Market Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a harmful gas that contributes to air pollution and can cause serious health problems. In recent years, there has been growing interest in developing catalysts that can efficiently reduce NO2 to harmless nitrogen gas (N2) under ambient conditions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials that have shown great potential in catalysis due to their high surface area and tunable structures. In this study, a novel copper-based MOF (Cu-TCPP) was synthesized and used as a catalyst for NO2 reduction. The Cu-TCPP MOF contained atomically dispersed copper sites that were able to react with NO2 to form nitrate (NO3-) and then reduce it to N2. The efficiency of the catalyst was tested under various conditions and it was found that the reaction rate increased with increasing temperature and decreasing NO2 concentration. The reaction mechanism was studied using a combination of spectroscopic and computational techniques, which revealed that the Cu-TCPP catalyst underwent a redox process during the reaction. This study demonstrates the potential of using atomically dispersed metal sites in MOFs for catalysis, particularly for the reduction of harmful pollutants like NO2. Future research in this area could lead to the development of more efficient and sustainable catalysts for air pollution control
